MILLENNIUM CHECK.POINT

Information is published during the FOR COMPUTER fair, which is part of the autumn FOR ARCH fair.

Some time ago students of the school of architecture were presented with the challenge of creating virtual architecture for developing communications at the turn of the millennium. Using computers wherever possible for modelling original ideas and presenting them visually, they were to create virtual constructions which would give full rein to their imagination and let them express what they are experiencing, sensing and feeling.

The first results were presented in spring 1998 at the virtual architecture exhibition in the exhibition hall of the College of Applied Arts, organised by Technický magazín, Ttrustem and the Centre for Computer Graphics. Fórum took up the project after the closure of Technický magazín.

It is not a competition in the strict sense of the word, but rather a game, an intellectual exercise, a challenge... and maybe even something more.

The final results will be presented in a virtual architecture exhibition in the year 2000.

You too can be there!

MILLENNIUM CHECK.POINT – a check point at the turn of the millennium

INFORMATION

….design a virtual structure to express a state of mind and meet people's needs in a situation which is both an end and a beginning, where expectations abound. MILLENNIUM CHECK.POINT is a pause, a sign, an inspiration, a point of passage, a border crossing point, a point at which to shift out the weight and ballast of the past, and at the same time a back door through which we can get back values we have lost...

.…decide the form, the appearance and the dimensions of a virtual construction …

...define the content, describe the functions, purpose and use of the MILLENNIUM CHECK.POINT…

….choose a place for the Millennium Check.Point - a boundary, a key site in a concrete town or countryside, an important symbolic place, with its building development, aesthetic values, environmental aspects and transport links...

Entries

Entries are invited primarily from Czech and foreign students of architecture, who are welcome to work together with people from other fields. Projects entered must be signed by the author/authors.

Technical Requirements

Any legal software which suits the author's needs and allows them to visualise their ideas can be used.

Virtual should be taken in the wider sense of the word, not only in that of 3D visualisation and computer-generated architectural plans.

The graphic data and material for publication should be available in A4 format, in slides or in digital form in one of the following formats: PICT, TIFF, JPEG; pen and paper drawings (ground plans, views, cross sections) can be up to A3 format. The accompanying text should not be more than one thousand words.

For interactive and multimedia projects, please contact us individually in advance. Further information can be obtained from Fórum magazine or on its web site, and questions, registrations and entries should also be sent there.

Publication and Presentation

Fórum will publish regular information on the development of virtual visions of the Millennium Check.Point in the virtual library on its web site.

Selected projects received by the end of September 1999 should be published on a CD ROM of virtual architecture, which we will publish to mark New Year 2000.

All projects will be presented at the exhibition of virtual architecture for the year 2000, which is being organised by Forum magazine in collaboration with Ttrust (a society for communications technology, art and science).

Fórum will also publish a special supplement for the exhibition.

Further information about Millennium Check.Point and its fate, and about rewards for participants will be published regularly on this web site.

Projects submitted remain the property of the authors, but the magazine retains the right to publish them in both printed and electronic form in publicising the MC.P.

Closing Date for Entries

We are collecting projects all the time! They can be delivered in person or sent by electronic or normal mail.

The final closing date is September 1999!

This will allow time for the fine tuning of Millenium Check.Point ready for the New Year 2000.
